The origins of Lac des Iles and the islands that now constitute Wexford Foundation began in the late 1880's when Mr D. W. Ross decided to go fishing. He had an interest in the a Lumber Company who had a camp on Lac L'Original, now Lac des Iles. Aside from the camp there was a nearby town, St Emile, founded in 1880 and seven local farming families around the lake. Mr Ross fell in love with the lake and over the next decades purchased a good portion of the land on the shore it along with 13 islands. The cost of the islands that constitute our holdings today was $475, an investment that has paid enormous dividends for all residents around the lake to the present.

Around the 1890's when the first house, was built many friends visited and were also entranced by the lake, purchasing lots from Mr Ross and surrounding land from the local families. Soon after a second home was built for one of the close friends. From that foundation there exists a community of seven or eight generations who have grown up at the lake. Many of these were involved with the YMCA and its Christian faith, leading to the foundation in 1890 of church services in homes, which still occurs several times during the summer. These gatherings, along with an annual regatta and other activities fostered a community spirit, which led to a group initiating the preservation of the islands in 1949. In 1982 the formation of Wexford Foundation was completed in order to permanently protect the islands.

L'histoire du lac des Îles et des îles qui constituent aujourd'hui la Fondation Wexford remonte à la fin des années 1880, lorsque M. D. W. Ross décida de partir pêcher. Il avait des parts dans une compagnie forestière qui possédait un camp sur le lac L'Original, aujourd'hui le lac des Îles. Vers les années 1890, lors de la construction de la première maison, de nombreux amis vinrent visiter les lieux et furent également conquis par le lac. Ils achetèrent des lots à M. Ross et des terres environnantes aux familles locales. Peu après, une deuxième maison fut construite pour un ami proche. De ces origines est née une communauté de sept ou huit générations qui ont grandi au bord du lac. Nombre d'entre eux étaient liés au YMCA et à sa foi chrétienne, ce qui a conduit à la création, en 1890, de services religieux à domicile, toujours organisés plusieurs fois durant l'été. Ces rassemblements, ainsi qu'une régate annuelle et d'autres activités, ont favorisé un esprit communautaire qui a incité un groupe à entreprendre la préservation des îles en 1949. La création de la Fondation Wexford, visant à protéger durablement les îles, a été finalisée en 1982.
